RWC in Melbs - mechanics and females

Posted by T 1/13/2009 4:33:40 PM
  • Hey all.
i'm tranferring my car (1994 nissan pulsar hatchback) from the ACT to VIC and I just got my roadworthy report. I've been quoted $880 (I originally was quoted $910, but they said they'd "kindly give me a discount") to fix it all today when it got a roadworthy certificate two years ago for practically nothing!
This is probably a hard task and I appreciate any advice - I'm just trying not toget ripped off because I'm a female. I'll list the problems they highlighted -
    *Front wheel alignment
    *front left-hand head lamp misaligned
*glove box doesn't close - need to repair (wasn't a problem last time)
    *drivers seat loose
    *front grill loose
*rear main oil leaks (pretty major and I've known about them for a while)
*high mount brake light needs replacing
*parcel shelf needs securing (one string is broken - this also wasn't a problem last time)

Does this price sound reasonable for the problems?
I've got a 6 days before this report expires. Does anyone know where a good mechanic is in the fitzroy/northcote/carlton/collingwood area?
    Cheers, T

      • Hi T,

I think it is very expensive. I am not sure if "rear main oil leaks" is an RWC item. You should ring up VicRoad and ask them. If this is not an RWC item, I suggest you not to fix it. Then the rest should cost no more than $200. You can also ring up a few mechanic shop and ask them to give you a quote on fixing the "rear main oil leaks". It may only cost you $300 alone.
Leaking oil at rear main is very common on cars that is over 10 years oil. Unless it is leaking badly, I would not worry too much. You just need to make sure your engine have enough oil and change oil regularly.

        Hope it helps.

      • Hi...

        • A front wheel alignment costs approx $50 at a tyre shop. I have just had both my cars done recently.
        • You can remove the parcel shelf altogether for the sake of the RWC, and put it back in after.
        • Headlamp adjustment is quick to do - mechanic just needs to adjust lamp with adjustment screws and align with beam aligner (10 mins).
        • Glove box does not close - adjust catch (5 mins).
        • Drivers seat loose - tighten bolts (10 mins).
        • Front grill loose - fit new clips/tighten screws (10-20 mins).
        • High mount bake light - replace globe ($3 globe) and 5 mins work).
        • The bulk of the cost is the rear main seal - if this is leaking bad then it will fail a RWC. Phone around and get quotes on replacing rear main seal. (gearbox, clutch and flywheel has to come out).
        Hope that helps.

      • Thanks so much for that.
The leak is quite bad and that was the the only item that I knew would desperately need fixing. I had a feeling that a lot of the other items wouldn't be so hard (or expensive) to fix.
Still need to find someone in the area who isn't a total rip-off...
        Cheers, T

      • The leaking rear main is the big problem, You might try giving it a good spray under the car with degreaser and washing off with a pressure wash just before taking it in for the RWC.
If there is no evidence of an oil leak they can't fail it on one!
But the problem you will most likely have is that of lifting the car and you probably don't have access to a pressure wash!

      • I agree with the other posters that they're attempting to hoodwink you. Use common sense and a couple of hours tinkering with a screwdriver would see you on your way to having most of the stuff done. As for the rear main oil leak, I recently had the same problem and would have involved getting at the gearbox just to repair the gasket: lots of $$ for an insignificant problem. As the mechanic explained to me, if it doesn't drop oil for 2 hours after wiping it clean then its not severe enough to consider it a RWC issue. Get your engine cleaned at a cleaners or spray it down with degreaser  then hose off (although do a search on how to do this, there are electrical parts which can be damaged if water gets in them.).
